The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrow Genre: General FictionI LOVED this book! I wasn't sure what to think about it, simply because I could never really pronounce the name of the book, but as soon as I picked it up and began to read the correspondences between 30 something author Juliet Ashton and her publisher, friends and some strangers.
Through the letters we are taken through a period in Juliet's life following the second world war as she questions her love life, her work and the journey she takes through some unexpected new friends.
This book was truly a joy to read. I was sad it was over so soon. Reviewed: May 06 2009 Average Rating: 9/10 - 3 reviews

The Book of Negroes | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Lawrence Hill Genre: Historical FictionThis brilliant novel follows the life story of Aminata Diallo, who as an 11 year old was taken into slavery in Africa and survived the sea-voyage to America.
She tells of years of slavery, using her mind to gain a better life for herself and her eventual freedom. We follow her around the world, through her many trials and tribulations, as she tries to return to her place of birth.
While there are sections of the book that are difficult to read, Hill richly recreate this dark time in human history. Reviewed: January 26 2009 Average Rating: 10/10 - 2 reviews

Water For Elephants | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Sarah Gruen Genre: General FictionI loved this beautifully told story! Jacob, a man now in his nineties, tells a story from his youth. His story is what happened to him when following a family tragedy he tried to escape his life and jumps on a train, which happens to be a circus train! Due to his veterinary knowledge he able to work for the travelling circus, and his world is greatly changed.
Jacob tells this story as he waits for family in his nursing home, and the narrative is wonderfully woven between present day and his circus days.
This was an engrossing story, that I read in one day and I can't wait to read more from this author. The ending had not one, but two surprise endings. It was well written, with great characters and settings. Well worth the read. Reviewed: November 18 2008 Average Rating: 9.7/10 - 5 reviews

Eclipse | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Stephenie Meyer Genre: Science Fiction/FantasyI've been sick this past week, and was lucky enough to have the remaining three books in the series out from the library. While trying to recover I read this book in one sitting.
Again, Stephanie Meyer has created a compelling story of love and friendship, sometimes unlikely friendship, centering about Bella, Edward and Jacob. Part of what I enjoyed most about these books was that they weren't predicable, and I fully accepted the world where myths and legends become reality.
The fantastic characters and fast-paced story pull the reader along on a wonderful ride, and although my heart was breaking many times during this book, and I was mentally yelling at some of the decisions the characters made, I couldn't wait for more and then was sad when it was over.
This was my favourite of the 4 books. Reviewed: November 02 2008 Average Rating: 7.4/10 - 6 reviews

Devil's Corner | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Lisa Scottoline Genre: Mystery and SuspenseI really, really liked this book! I think that I read it in one sitting.....moving around my place to find the quietest corner to keep reading!
This was the second Lisa Scottoline book that I read, and I wasn't disappointed. The action starts from the first line of the book, as the main character is caught with a gun at her head and the fast pace keeps up through the rest of the book.
Although I did spend half of my time thinking "what are you doing?!?" to the main character Vicki Allegretti, the book is well written with interesting characters and a really fast, twisting plotline!
I can't wait to read more! Reviewed: September 28 2008 Average Rating: 10/10 - 2 reviews

Daddy's Girl | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Lisa Scottoline Genre: Mystery and SuspenseI'm so glad that I followed "Sue the bookworms's" recommendation and read this book. It was exactly what I looking for and was a brilliant and fast read.
Natalie Greco was a great character who gets caught up in a murder mystery that changes her life. The story was extremely interesting and fast-paced. The twists and turns were not expected and the ending threw me for a loop. I certainly wasn't expecting that! I picked this book up after work, and basically read it until I was finished. I've already ordered a couple more books from Lisa Scottoline from the library and am very excited to read more from her. Her writing is witty, amusing and very enjoyable to read! Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Jordan Sonnenblick Genre: General FictionI absolutely loved this book. I had difficulty putting it down, and even thought of getting out of bed (although I was tired) to finish reading it.
This story is brilliantly told by Steven, a 13 year old boy who is dealing with his 4 year old brothers diagnoses of cancer. The writing style is both witty and touching and I was often halfway between crying (which I did a few times) and laughing.
I read this book due to its fabulous review on this site, and I concur with everything written about it. It was wonderful, unique and a story for readers of all ages. Highly, highly recommended. You won't regret it! Reviewed: April 18 2008 Average Rating: 9.3/10 - 3 reviews

A Thousand Splendid Suns | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Khaled Hosseini Genre: General FictionThis was an extremely difficult book for me to read, but I think that's mainly due to Khaled Hosseini's skill as a writer. I was so drawn into to the story, and the fate of the two main characters that my heart broke with every difficult period of their lives.
Hosseini's writing pulls you deep into the lives of the characters. Like 'The Kite Runner', this is not always a happy book to read but if you persist, you will be rewarded with a beautiful and rich story. Reviewed: January 10 2008 Average Rating: 10/10 - 6 reviews

Oryx and Crake | 10/10 |
| | | | Author: Margaret Atwood Genre: General FictionThis is a brilliant and frightening look into the future, where man's deeds have come back to haunt him.
Atwood's dark humour takes this serious subject and creates an intriguing, engaging and mesmerizing book.
The narrative switches between present day and the past which led up to his current situation. The book brings up many questions as to what our future could be like.
I found this books very interesting, well written and extremely engaging. Highly recommended. Reviewed: November 19 2006 Average Rating: 10/10 - 2 reviews

This book is about life, happiness, friendship and death, and how to find a balance between them all. I read this book while onroute to a funeral, and Morrie's words and advice helped me with my grief.
